The Story Behind Sand & Wood

People often assume that businesses begin with a grand plan. A carefully mapped-out strategy. A five-year vision. A business degree and a spreadsheet.

Sand & Wood started with a bag of wax, a handful of fragrance oils, and a determination to create something of my own.

What began as a simple experiment at my kitchen table has grown into a business, a shop, and a way of life that allows me to do something I never wanted to compromise on: be there for my son.

Like many small businesses, Sand & Wood was born from equal parts necessity and passion. My son is on the autism spectrum and requires additional support. I wanted to build something that would allow me to work around his needs rather than fitting our lives around someone else's schedule. I needed flexibility, independence, and the opportunity to create a future that worked for our family.

The first products I made were wax melts.

There was no overnight success. Instead, there were countless evenings spent testing different fragrance combinations, experimenting with waxes, and learning through trial and error. I became slightly obsessed with getting it right. Every batch taught me something new, and slowly I began to understand that creating a product people genuinely love is about far more than making something smell nice.

In the beginning, I worked with soy wax, as many makers do. But the more I learned about wax performance, sustainability, and fragrance delivery, the more I felt there was a better option available.

Eventually, I transitioned to a blend of rapeseed and coconut wax, and it transformed the products.

Rapeseed and coconut wax offers a cleaner burn, excellent scent throw, and a beautifully smooth finish. Unlike soy, which is often imported from overseas, rapeseed can be grown much closer to home, helping to reduce transportation impacts. The blend also performs exceptionally well in both wax melts and candles, producing a cleaner, longer-lasting burn with minimal soot. For me, it was about creating a product that felt better in every sense—better quality, better performance, and a more considered choice.

Once the wax melts were perfected, my attention turned to candles.

That journey was arguably even more challenging.

Creating a beautiful candle isn't simply about pouring wax into a vessel and adding fragrance. Every element affects performance: the wax blend, fragrance load, vessel size, wick choice, curing time, and burn behaviour. It took months of testing and refinement before I was truly happy. I wanted candles that burned evenly, delivered a consistent fragrance throughout the room, and reflected the quality I wanted Sand & Wood to stand for.

Eventually, the candle collection became the foundation of the business.

As Sand & Wood evolved, so did my understanding of why people buy fragrance products. Increasingly, customers weren't just looking for a lovely scent. They were looking for a feeling. Calm. Focus. Comfort. Balance.

That understanding inspired the Manifest Collection.

Unlike traditional fragrance-led products, the Manifest range was developed using carefully selected essential oils designed to help create particular moods and environments. Some blends encourage calm and relaxation. Others support focus, clarity, and mindfulness. The collection became a natural extension of everything Sand & Wood had grown to represent: creating products that enhance everyday life in meaningful ways.

Of course, none of this happened from behind a shop counter.

In the early days, weekends were spent loading boxes into the car and travelling to fairs, markets, and country craft shows across the South East. Those events became my shopfront, my testing ground, and my education all rolled into one.

The very first show I ever attended was the County Craft Show at Penshurst Place.

I still remember the nerves.

Would people stop? Would they buy? Would they understand what I was trying to build?

Thankfully, they did.

Those early customers gave me confidence, feedback, and encouragement. They helped shape the products and gave me the belief that this little business could become something more.

One market that proved particularly important was in Faversham. After trading there and building a loyal local following, I was offered the opportunity to take on a shop.

It felt like the natural next step.

Having a permanent home for Sand & Wood allowed me to create a space that reflected everything I wanted the brand to be: welcoming, thoughtful, and full of carefully chosen products. It also gave customers a place to discover not just candles and wax melts, but the wider world of Sand & Wood.

What many people don't see behind the scenes is the balancing act.

Running a small business while raising a child with additional needs is rewarding, but it isn't always easy.

There have been sacrifices along the way. One of the hardest has been losing weekends with my son while attending markets, events, and running the shop. Small business ownership often demands long hours and constant attention, especially in the early years when you're wearing every hat yourself.

The reality is that there are days when the balance feels impossible.

There are school runs squeezed between deliveries. Product testing after bedtime. Admin late at night. Worrying about stock levels while helping with homework. Trying to be fully present in two places at once.

But there is also immense gratitude.

Gratitude for the customers who choose to support an independent business. Gratitude for every market organiser who gave me a pitch when I was just starting out. Gratitude for every person who walks through the shop door.

Most of all, gratitude for the opportunity to build something that works around my family rather than the other way around.

The dream now is simple: to continue growing Sand & Wood, to create more beautiful products, and one day to employ someone who can help shoulder some of the weekend workload.

When that day comes, I'll happily spend more Saturdays doing what inspired this journey in the first place—being with my son.

Because while Sand & Wood began with a bag of wax and a few fragrance oils, it was always about something much bigger.

It was about creating a life.
